How to Feel at Home in Who You Are

sensitive souls feeling safe in the body

A few days ago, I ran one of my monthly Soul Healing Workshops on the theme of feeling at home in who you are.

I often run these workshops around themes that I personally resonate with and that my clients tend to resonate with too, such as sensitivity, boundaries, visibility, and all the things that sensitive souls often quietly struggle with in a world that can feel incredibly loud, demanding, and emotionally overwhelming.

There are two feelings that come up time and time again in my work. The first is, "I don't feel at home in myself." The second is, "I don't feel like I belong on Earth." Although they can feel similar, I've come to see them as two very different experiences. One is about feeling disconnected from yourself and the other is about feeling disconnected from the world around you.

In our workshop we explored both themes, which I’ll share with you below, because understanding where these feelings come from is often the first step towards coming home to who you really are.

Why Don't I Feel at Home in Myself?

A lot of the work I do is about helping people feel more at home in who they are.

That's really at the heart of everything I share, because I genuinely believe that the more we understand ourselves, the more we fall out of self-judgement and into self-compassion. Instead of asking, "what's wrong with me?" we begin asking, "oh... I get it now. I understand why I've struggled. I understand why life has felt this way." And that shift changes everything.

Most of us think we're searching for purpose, love, success or clarity. But underneath all of those desires is something much simpler - we're actually searching for peace. We're searching for that feeling of finally coming home to ourselves.

Over the years, and especially through the Soul Contract work, I've noticed there are two very different experiences that often get tangled together. The first is not feeling at home within yourself. The second is not feeling like you belong on Earth. Although they can feel similar, they're actually pointing towards two different healing journeys.

Sometimes we can go through life feeling strangely disconnected from ourselves. It's difficult to explain because we're obviously living inside our own bodies, but something feels separate.

You might struggle to know what you really want, overthink every decision, second-guess yourself or find it difficult to trust your intuition because you don't quite know what feels true anymore. Often this shows up as shyness, people-pleasing or holding yourself back. You know there's more of you waiting to come forward, but expressing yourself doesn't always feel safe.

The battle between the ego and the soul

In my work, I often describe this as a disconnect between the conscious personality and the soul.

Our soul chose to incarnate into this personality, but alongside that we also have the ego-mind, whose job is to keep our consciousness limited in order for us to eventually break free from. It encourages us to analyse, overthink, predict the future and avoid anything that feels uncertain, while the soul is always trying to move us towards truth.

When those two parts of us are pulling in different directions, it can feel like we're constantly fighting ourselves. One part wants to grow, while the other desperately wants to stay safe.

Sensitivity plays a huge role in this too. Many of us are incredibly sensitive people, but because feeling can become so overwhelming, we end up disconnecting from our emotions altogether. It's almost like swinging between two extremes - we're either feeling everything or we're feeling nothing at all.

I know this one well. Sometimes I'll see something heartbreaking and immediately want to turn away because I know how deeply I'll feel it. It's almost easier not to look. But Earth is an emotional playground - we're here to experience the full spectrum of being human, and we just can't fully embody who we are while avoiding the emotional journey.

That doesn't mean we have to live overwhelmed by our emotions, it simply means allowing ourselves to actually feel them instead of spending our lives distracting ourselves from them.

Soul Contract energies that block our connection to ourselves

Within the Soul Contract there are certain energies that often contribute to this feeling.

The 7-7 energy, for example, often carries the belief that it isn't safe to fully be yourself. After emotional heartbreak or experiences that taught us it wasn't safe to express who we really are, we begin hiding parts of ourselves. We stay small because somewhere deep inside we believe that's where safety lives.

The 3-3 energy often carries a different wound. Instead of not feeling safe, it doesn't feel worthy. These souls often struggle to name what they're feeling because the discomfort sits so deeply beneath the surface. Rather than sitting with it, they keep moving, distracting themselves, staying busy or avoiding stillness altogether.

The healing isn't becoming someone different. It's remembering who you've always been underneath the conditioning, and the more awareness we bring to these patterns, the less we judge ourselves for them, and it’s this compassion that creates true freedom from within.

Why Don't I Feel Like I Belong on Earth?

Now this is a different feeling altogether.

Not feeling at home in yourself is often about feeling disconnected from who you are but not feeling like you belong on Earth is something else entirely. It's the feeling that you've never quite fitted into this world, or wondering why everyone else seems to know ‘how to be human’ while you're quietly trying to work it all out.

I've heard people describe it as feeling like they're watching life through a pane of glass. Everyone else seems to be getting on with life, building careers, raising families, making plans and moving through the world with certainty. Meanwhile, you're standing on the outside looking in, wondering why you've always felt so different.

And to be honest, I think this feeling often becomes even stronger as we move further along our spiritual journey.

The more we begin to remember that we're spiritual beings having a human experience, the more we can feel like this physical world isn't quite home. For some people, that feeling has been there since childhood. Others describe themselves as feeling like aliens, never quite understanding why they've never naturally fitted into the way society expects us to live.

No where feels like home

I can certainly relate to parts of that - for years I moved from place to place, job to job, always wondering where I was supposed to settle. I kept thinking there would be one place where everything would click and I'd finally feel at home. Looking back now, I realise I wasn't actually searching for a location, I was searching for a feeling.

What I've come to understand is that if we don't feel settled within ourselves, nowhere outside of us will ever truly feel like home.

Our external reality so often reflects what's happening internally. If we don't feel safe within ourselves, we'll keep searching for safety somewhere else. If we don't feel like we belong within our own being, we'll keep hoping that the next place, the next relationship or the next chapter of life will finally give us that feeling.

This is why so many sensitive souls feel so exhausted!

It's not because they're doing life wrong, it's because they're trying to remember who they really are whilst also learning how to navigate a world that can feel incredibly overwhelming. Spiritual awakening isn't always peaceful - in many ways it's the opposite. It asks us to question everything we've believed about ourselves and about life, and that can feel incredibly lonely at times.

Soul Contract energies that struggle to feel at home on earth

Within the Soul Contract, there are certain energies that often carry this experience.

The 5-5 energy, for example, can feel incredibly ethereal. These souls often feel far more comfortable living in ideas, possibilities and higher consciousness than they do being fully present in physical reality. Their minds naturally drift towards the unseen, the spiritual and the expansive, which can sometimes make everyday life feel surprisingly heavy.

The lesson of the 5-5 isn't to escape the physical world, but to bring those beautiful visions down into reality and allow them to take form here on Earth.

The 8-8 energy carries a different experience. At its core, the 8-8 can hold the feeling of simply not wanting to be here. Life feels heavy and the emotional intensity of being human can become overwhelming, and so there's often a tendency to disconnect from the body, from emotions or from the physical world altogether.

Ironically, 8s are here to do exactly the opposite. They're here to create heaven on Earth and discover peace within themselves so they can create more peace around them.

Some souls also carry frequencies that simply make them feel like outsiders from the very beginning.

They don't naturally follow the crowd, they question the world around them and they often see things differently. Whilst that can feel isolating, it's also part of their gift because they're not here to fit into old systems, they're actually here to gently help create new ones.

I think this is one of the reasons so many people find the spiritual journey so tiring.

There can be moments where you wonder why you can't just live life like everyone else seems to. Why does everything have to feel so deep? Why does every relationship seem to become another opportunity for healing? Why can't life just be... easier? But perhaps that's because your soul didn't come here to sleepwalk through life - it actually came here to remember.

The beautiful irony is that the more we stop trying to belong everywhere else, the more we begin to belong within ourselves.
