Your Soul Purpose Isn’t What You Think
It’s not about what you do, but who you are.
These are the words that I need to always remind myself of when I’m caught in a cycle or busyness, urgency and drive. It’s a wonderful thing to be ambitious, but what is the end goal of that ambition? This is something I’m going to dive into.
On the one hand, we want to achieve in order to feel safe, in the most physical sense of having money to support our lives - providing the most basic needs, such as food and shelter, as well as the more joyful-inspired ones, such as fun experiences, celebratory moments, beauty and travel.
This is a physical driver from the body’s consciousness - the need to feel safe.
We also want to achieve in order to feel worthy, to create the feeling within that we are somehow ‘enough’. This is often something that we subconsciously feel we have to prove to our parents, to society, to ourselves, and also to God (not the big man in the sky looking down on us, but the fabric of life itself - the Universe).
This is an emotion driver from the ego - the need to feel worthy.
All of us, no matter who we are, are driven by these two needs, but I’d add there’s also a third need that creates a driving force under our skin, propelling us forwards. This is about our desire to entwine ourselves with the universe and expand in a cosmic dance of creativity and purpose.
This is an energetic driver from the soul - the need to expand.
The reason I wanted to write about the drivers that exist within us is because we are here to get really clear about who is in the driving seat in our life, especially when it comes to realising our potential (or what most of us like to call our ‘soul purpose’) in our short time on earth.
We are human beings, not human doings
The reason I wanted to write about the drivers that exist within us is because we are here to get really clear about who is in the driving seat in our life, especially when it comes to realising our potential in our short time on earth.
Many people book Soul Contract Readings with me and ask about their soul purpose and what they’re really here to do in this lifetime. This is a loaded question that often comes weighted with heavy expectations, burning desires and a core driver of freedom and escape from a life that is not as fulfilling, satisfying or enriching as they had hoped.
What I always say, when asked this question, is that your Soul Contract does not tell you what to do, it merely shows you who you have the potential of becoming.
We are human beings, not human doings, but we always get it the wrong way around (myself included). We think that the ‘being’ state comes from the ‘doing’ - we’ll be happy once we achieve a certain goal, do a certain job, or have a certain possession.
Yet it is the ‘being’ state that actually creates the ‘doing’.
It sounds a little confusing even when I write it, but this isn’t a new concept. Spiritual practices from all corners of the world share the wisdom of being in the moment, present and still, in order to connect more deeply to oneself, and to flow with life.
But in our current world, we are often sold a dream under the guise of spirituality. Inundated with catchy hooks, such as ‘manifest your dream life’ or ‘attract abundance and make all your dreams come true’. Empty, confusing and over-simplified.
The spiritual trap of quick fixes and instant results
We’re also sold quick fixes in a culture that thrives on immediacy, big promises and quick results, so waiting, patience and stillness doesn’t go down too well with many of us. We want it, and we want it now.
And I’ll be honest here, it doesn’t go down too well with me either. I’m in the generation that grew up with the internet, mobile phones, Amazon Prime and £10 Ryanair flights around Europe. Having everything at the click of a button is embedded in my DNA.
I also have the strong energies of 12-3 in my Soul Contract (not showing up once, but twice) which are all about expansion, learning to find balance, and slowing down to feel the deeper emotions within.
In fact, nothing about my Soul Contract is patient - I am the most impatient person, I am always in a rush, and I have a massive fear around a lack of time.
Yet, it is always our greatest challenge which holds the seeds of our deepest potential, because we are here to transmute it, and step through into greater self-awareness, greater resiliency and, of course, greater wisdom.
And this is exactly what your Soul Contract shares with you. We explore your past, your present and your potential - not only in terms of what you are here to do, but who you are here to become.
When we embody a state of I AM, we are sending out a signal to the Universe that this is who we are, and the Universe responds in kind because like attracts like. And if you want to dive into this further, Wayne Dyer’s brilliant book The Power of Intention is a perfect place to start.
Our name is a vibration, constantly creating our reality, which is where the Soul Contract Reading work comes from. So, the clearer we get on the reality we’re currently living, the clearer we can get on what energies are creating that, and what energies we haven’t yet fully activated.
We all get caught up in the mind. Endless cycles of thinking, analysing and worrying. Which is exactly why so little changes in our lives - the mind’s fear, doubt and insecurity stops us in our tracks.
This is why having self-awareness of these programmes running in the background can be such a powerful catalyst for change in our lives.
The power of self-awareness in your healing journey
In the Soul Contract we all have a different combination of numbers, and each of these numbers is like a delicate seesaw of the positive and negative aspects of each number.
For example, I have the 12-3 in my Soul Contract which is all about balanced expansion. In a negative aspect, I can be totally out of balance, overly judgemental and locked into deep unworthiness that sabotages my ability to earn money and bring my talents out into the world.
In a positive aspect, the 12-3 energy is so expansive, expressive and loving. I express love very easily (and people really feel that), create beautiful balance in my life, and come into deep worthiness of my gifts and talents, that I can then share with the world in an expansive, powerful and catalytic way.
Sounds good right?
So, when it comes to having self-awareness of this 12-3 energy, I now understand, through knowing about it, when I’m stuck in unworthiness that is sabotaging putting myself out there, whether it’s on social media or even just speaking up in a meeting. I can also recognise when I’m burning myself out trying to do too much, which also comes from a place of unworthiness.
The beautiful thing here is that every number in the Soul Contract System has this seesaw of challenges versus potential - and the more you understand the energies in your chart, and really recognise what energies are driving you in every single moment of your life, the more you can begin to slowly shift into those more positive aspects.
Thus making life smoother and more graceful as you step into self-empowerment.
Our life’s journey isn’t one of doing, it’s one of becoming, and then using that wisdom that we have developed within ourselves, to create outwardly into the world.
Finding balance in your life to embody your potential
Coming all the way back to the original point that I wanted to share - there are drivers that exist within us: our physical driver for survival, our emotional driver for worthiness and our spiritual driver for soul expansion.
We are here to find balance between all three, and not let one of them dominate our road trip through this lifetime.
At different points in our lives, it’s important for our soul to step aside and let our physical self take the wheel, because we live in a physical world after all, and while our soul may just want to daydream, create and bliss out on the heavenly vibe of life, we also need to live (which is something I recently wrote about here).
Though if we only let the physical driver handle the wheel, our soul doesn’t get the chance to create, expand and evolve, which is deeply unfulfilling for us.
So, at the same time, we need to let go of the physical need for safety and come into a more open, expansive and trusting gear, which is when the spiritual driver needs to come and take the wheel. This driver takes us on a beautiful, scenic, but slightly terrifying cliffside road - a more dynamic journey all round.
And sometimes, we also need to let our emotional driver into the driving seat. If we do not allow ourselves to feel the full spectrum of emotions, we cannot hope to understand ourselves on a deeper level, and develop the emotional resiliency and wisdom needed for us to grow.
When we think about what our soul purpose is, we only need to recognise that our soul purpose is a state of being that then shapes what we become capable of achieving.
It is a journey of a life-time - a winding, never-ending river of twists and turns. I once wrote that “there is not one pot of gold, there are unlimited rainbows and treasures to discover in our life” and I still stand by that. I see it in my own Soul Contract that I am here to do many different things, not just one singular thing.
Ultimately, our Soul Contract is the map that can guide us through this life, not towards a singular goal of a soul purpose but towards deep soul fulfilment, love, higher consciousness and pure potentiality - all things that I think are pretty worthwhile, wouldn’t you agree?
