Why Life Gets Chaotic Before a Spiritual Breakthrough (And How to Navigate It)
There’s a strange kind of magic that begins to unfold when you start to rise in consciousness.
When you step onto the path of emotional self-awareness, spiritual connection, and remembering the truth of who you really are. But often, what we’re not told is how challenging it can be when we’re right on the edge of a major shift.
One minute, you’re feeling connected and aligned, the next, it feels like everything is unravelling. If you’ve ever found yourself there, you're not alone.
In my experience, whenever we begin to rise in consciousness (which is essentially becoming more emotionally self-aware, more attuned to our soul, more awake to the truth of who we are) something curious happens.
The old energy, the outdated patterns, and even the world around us (which I refer to as the matrix) seem to try to pull us back. It's like a last-ditch attempt to keep us from expanding. And that can feel disheartening, confusing, and, honestly, just really hard.
The final darkness before the upgrade
Looking back, I can see this clearly in two recent chapters of my own life.
One was in May 2024 after a period where I'd been doing so much inner work, aligning with my purpose, and letting go of old belief systems that no longer served me.
Yet I hit a wall. I was so tired! Tired of the struggle, of feeling time-poor, of giving so much of myself and not feeling the return. I remember thinking, I just don’t want to do this anymore - I’m exhausted, when will it end?
But what I didn’t realise at the time was that I was on the brink of a major upgrade, a shift into a much more abundant, fulfilling phase. That deep despair was, in a strange way, a clearing. It was showing me what I couldn’t carry with me into this new space.
Things had to change, especially financially, and they did. I took action - some of it bold, some of it uncomfortable - and things began to shift. But it didn’t happen overnight. There was this chaos first, a kind of emotional storm that held me in its grasp and I didn’t know how to see my way through it.
And then it passed. The lightness returned. Things began to flow again.
It happened again recently, and I recognised the pattern. That familiar voice of doubt returned: Maybe I’m not meant to be doing this? Maybe I should just do something else. And again, I had to let go of something that wasn’t aligned. I had to trust that releasing it would create space for something better, and it did.
Releasing what you can’t take with you
This is such a key part of the healing journey. When we’re evolving, we can’t carry everything with us. Those old, dense, painful emotions, even if we can’t always name them, start to rise to the surface. They need to be witnessed, felt, and released.
Sometimes, especially if you have 3s in your Soul Contract like I do, you might not even know exactly what you’re feeling. You just know something is off. And it can take real inner excavation to understand what’s being stirred up. For me, I often need to go deep within to uncover those hidden pockets of emotional energy that are asking to be seen.
It’s not easy work. It can be physically draining and emotionally intense. But it’s sacred and does a wonderful job of making space for more of who we truly are to come through.
But here’s the part that’s just as important.
After the release, there needs to be action. This was a huge learning for me. We can’t just keep clearing and clearing without moving. Once the heaviness is gone, we have to step towards something new.
That action doesn’t always have to be dramatic. Sometimes it’s a big decision (and if decisions feel hard you may want to take a read of this), like ending a job or saying no to something that drains you. Sometimes it’s gentler, like saying yes to rest, reaching out to someone, spending time in nature, or finally doing that thing you’ve been putting off.
And depending on the energies in your Soul Contract, taking action can feel like a real challenge. For example, if you have 11-2s, 7s, or 4s, you might feel fear around stepping out on your own, fear of being hurt, or being vulnerable and letting go of control. But each step you take, no matter how small, is a message to the universe, and to yourself, that you’re ready.
That’s what I had to do. Release the old. Then act with intent and trust. And every time I’ve done that, life has responded. Things have opened up and joy has returned.
Remember - you’re not as alone as you think you are
If you’re in that heavy place right now, please know this: it doesn’t mean you’re failing. It often means you’re on the edge of something new. That final darkness is asking to be seen, released, and honoured.
Hang in there. Let yourself feel it, then let it go. And when you’re ready, ask yourself gently: What’s the next aligned step I can take? It might be something small and soft. It might be something brave. Either way, it matters.
