Why Do We Get Stuck in Perfectionism Procrastination & Self-sabotage?

Why We Get Stuck: Perfectionism, Procrastination, and Self-Sabotage

I love bringing awareness to this theme that so many of us experience in our lives, yet don’t always fully understand - and it’s all about those patterns that keep us stuck.

Perfectionism, procrastination, avoidance, and self-sabotage tend to weave together in ways that can feel subtle but incredibly powerful. They don’t always show up loudly; more often, they creep in quietly and shape our behaviour under the surface of our consciousness, without us even realising.

This is something I explore deeply in my work, because at the root of it all isn’t failure or laziness, it’s just about a lack of awareness.

When we don’t understand what’s driving us beneath the surface, we end up repeating the same cycles, not knowing how to find a break or breathing space in the cycle. But when we bring awareness to those patterns, everything begins to shift.

When we bring awareness, consciousness and feeling to the parts of us that have been running in the background, that we might judge or avoid looking at, we can meet ourselves with compassion and understanding, and that’s where real change begins.

The roots of perfectionism

Perfectionism is often the starting point for how we get stuck in loops and cycles of avoidance.

On the surface, it can look like a positive trait - wanting to do things well and wanting to get it right - but underneath, it’s usually driven by fear. Fear of getting it wrong, fear of being judged, or fear of not being enough. It creates an internal pressure that tells us everything has to be just right before we can move forward.

The problem is, that standard is impossible to meet, so we either hold ourselves back or exhaust ourselves trying.

This is in part due to a subconscious need to prove ourselves to those in authority, which are our parents, other people, and God. It’s also strongly linked to the 10-1 frequency in the Soul Contract which connected to the masculine expression of God.

With this energy we’re here to learn to let go of perfectionism and soften into deeper compassion, letting go of the parts of us that drive ourselves too hard.

Closely linked to this is overthinking. When we get stuck in our heads, we start analysing every possible outcome - how things should be, how they could go, what might happen if we make the wrong choice. It can feel productive, but more often than not, it’s a way of trying to stay in control.

At its core, overthinking is about safety. If we can just figure everything out in advance, we believe we can avoid discomfort. But instead of creating clarity, it often leaves us feeling stuck and disconnected from our intuition.

This is definitely a theme that shows up in the 7-7 energy in the Soul Contract, as well as the 5-5s and 8-8s which all tend to be the overthinking energies in the Soul Contract.

For some people, this doesn’t show up as inaction, but as doing too much.

There can be a strong drive to create, achieve, and bring multiple ideas to life all at once, and while this often comes from a place of deep creativity, it can quickly lead to overwhelm. Without grounding, that constant output becomes unsustainable, and burnout follows, and when that happens, it’s common to swing between overworking and complete shutdown, unsure how to find balance.

Procrastination and self-sabotage

This is where procrastination begins to take hold, and it’s important to understand that procrastination isn’t laziness - it’s fear.

This fear is different for all of us, and while it can often be the fear of failure, just as often it can be the fear of success and everything that might come with it. And so when we feel that fear, we delay taking action. We distract ourselves, avoid the task, or convince ourselves we’ll do it later, which is where the self-sabotage and avoidance starts to take hold.

And, of course, sometimes, it’s also rooted in not knowing how to do something, which creates uncertainty and leads to inaction and procrastination.

The difficult part is what comes next. After procrastinating, we often feel guilt, frustration, or even shame. We know we’re capable, yet we didn’t follow through, and it’s that exact emotional response then feeds back into the cycle, making it even harder to move forward the next time.

And underneath all of this sits self-sabotage, which is often the hardest pattern to recognise. It doesn’t always look obvious, and it’s rarely conscious, but you might feel like something is holding you back, but you can’t quite identify what it is.

That’s because self-sabotage operates beneath the surface, shaped by beliefs, conditioning, and past experiences that haven’t yet been fully seen or understood. Our mind is always trying to fulfil the beliefs in the subconscious mind. So, if we subconsciously believe we’re not good enough to do something, our mind will do everything in it’s power to make that belief a reality - which is why the things we want don’t transpire.

It’s not because we’re doing something wrong, it’s because the self-sabotage is too strong in our subconscious and it’s not allowing a new reality to come through.

Understanding our deepest patterns

The work isn’t about forcing ourselves to push through or trying to “fix” ourselves, but about becoming aware of what’s really going on.

When we can bring those patterns into the light, we create the opportunity to understand them, to feel them, and ultimately to release them. That process takes compassion, not criticism, which can feel like the most challenging thing in this healing journey, but certainly not impossible.

You are not broken - you just have a lot going on under the surface. And once you begin to see those patterns clearly, you can start to shift them. From that place, it becomes much easier to move forward in a way that feels more aligned, grounded, and true to who you are.
