The Hidden Themes of Self-sabotage in Your Soul Contract

Self-sabotage and the Soul Contract

We all self-sabotage, and absolutely no one is immune to tripping themselves up, but why do we do it? And, more importantly, how do the energies in our Soul Contract contribute to our self-sabotaging patterns and behaviours?

The definition of self-sabotage is ‘behaviour or thoughts, especially of an involuntary or unconscious nature, that are harmful to one’s own interests or development’ and this is spot on.

Our self-sabotage is usually hidden deep within us, operating under the surface in a sneaky and subtle way. We may be slightly aware, but we can often be completely unconscious of our self-sabotaging beliefs, patterns and behaviours. Yet we are very familiar with the result of them. The result is that we don't fulfil our dreams, and all the shame, disappointment and emotions that come along with it.

Our Soul Contract carries the themes of our lifetime - our challenges as well as our potential - and so we can often access a deeper understanding of our self-sabotages through looking at the energies we’re carrying. While self-sabotage affects us all in varying degrees, knowing the energies in our Soul Contract helps us to become aware of the deeper patterns operating under the surface of our lives.

As a second step, we can then use healing to understand the root cause, and bring consciousness and feeling to what’s really going on, so it can be fully understood, acknowledged and released.

Below I go through each of the 22 number combinations and the self-sabotage that tends to show up with them, which I hope will help you in some way to understand yourself on a deeper level. If you’re curious about which numbers you carry, you can get your free Soul Contract chart here, and start piecing together your own story with the information I share below.

Self-sabotage in the Soul Contract numbers 1-1 to 8-8

Soul Contract number 1-1

Self-sabotage for this energy can be subtle and easy to miss. It shows up in the small moments where you might override your inner knowing - saying yes when you mean no, or making choices that aren’t truly aligned to your inner values. It’s not dramatic, but over time it creates a quiet sense of being off-centre or out of alignment. You can end up looking outside yourself for clarity, when you’ve already felt what was right. The work here is to notice those moments earlier and let them guide you back to your own integrity. The more you trust that alignment strengthens you, the less this pattern holds.

Soul Contract number 2-2

2-2 self-sabotage often shows up as repetition. You might find yourself in the same dynamics, making similar choices, or circling back to things you thought you’d moved through - almost like you’re holding on but you don’t know why. There’s often that frustration of, “why am I here again?” but this isn’t a lack of learning - it’s actually something deeper that hasn’t fully integrated yet. Instead of moving forward, you loop and repeat, feeling like you’re making the same so-called mistakes. The shift comes when you stop resisting the pattern and start getting curious about it. When you meet the cycle consciously, it begins to complete itself and the repetition naturally starts to lessen its grip on you.

Soul Contract number 3-3

3–3 self-sabotage is very much rooted in the “I’m not enough” narrative, and it can often stop you before you begin. You might hold back, downplay yourself, or not follow through, not because you can’t, but because something underneath says it won’t work or you don’t deserve it. As a master number, this can feel intense and the voice that tells you you’re not good enough can feel very convincing. The work is to move anyway, even with that voice there, and as you take consistent steps forward, you begin to build real evidence of your capability, and the sabotage starts to loosen.

Soul Contract number 4-4

Self-sabotage for 4-4s often comes through trying to do everything alone. You might struggle to trust support, push it away, or feel like you have to do everything yourself. This can create unnecessary pressure and can leave you feeling unsupported, even when support is there - you’re just not noticing it or trusting it. The pattern is a quiet disconnection from being held, by others and by God, and you’re here to learn to lean into trust and allow support in, rather than bracing against life. As you do this, things begin to feel steadier and less effortful, and more love and abundance comes to you as a result.

Soul Contract number 5-5

5–5 self-sabotage shows up when you hold back your voice. You avoid saying what you really feel, stay quiet to keep things comfortable, or don’t speak up when it matters. In the moment it feels easier, but it often leaves frustration or a sense of being unseen. Over time, this builds, and can lead into resentment and an ingrained pattern of shyness that’s hard to break free from. The pattern isn’t that your voice doesn’t matter, it’s that it hasn’t been fully expressed, and is asking to be heard. The work here is to find ways of speaking that feel safe and grounded. As you begin to use your voice, even in small ways, you begin to allow your true voice to flow through you in your creativity, as well as your words.

Soul Contract number 6-6

Self-sabotage for the 6-6 energy is tied to pressure and focus. You might have a huge amount of creativity but struggle to build the structure to bring it out, and then find yourself unable to follow through when things don’t go exactly to plan. This can lead to procrastination, stopping and starting, and avoiding doing the things you want. And often, this can lead to wanting to numb the pain of your unexpressed creativity. The pattern is trying to control the process too tightly, which blocks the natural flow. The goal here is to soften that control and allow things to come through more intuitively. And when you bring that flexibility and structure together, completion becomes much easier.

Soul Contract number 7-7

7–7 self-sabotage often looks like hiding, when you really want to be seen for who you are. You might hold parts of yourself back, avoid being fully seen, or keep a protective layer in place in case of judgement from others, which only serves to limit connection and keep you slightly separate from the world. The pattern runs deep, so it can feel very natural to stay guarded with your walls up, staying in isolation instead of going out into the world to engage with people as your true self. The work is to gently allow yourself to be seen with people you trust and feel safe with. As you do this, the need to hide lessens and a stronger sense of authenticity and confidence begins to shine through.

Soul Contract number 8-8

The self-sabotage for 8-8s can show up as either pulling away from emotional connection with others, or struggling to stay rooted. You might disconnect when things deepen in a relationship, or feel restless and unable to fully commit or settle to a place, job or a person. This creates a stop-start energy in relationships and life, where things begin but don’t quite stay anchored. Over time, that can feel destabilising and unrewarding. The goal for this energy is to stay present when the instinct is to move or disconnect, and to allow yourself to root into what’s there, feeling all the emotions as they come up. As you ground, within yourself and your commitments, both connection and stability begin to build, which can feel deeply rewarding.

Self-sabotage in the Soul Contract numbers 9-9 to 16-7

Soul Contract number 9-9

9–9 self-sabotage often shows up as giving your power away. You might stay in situations where you feel diminished, struggle to assert yourself, or default to letting someone else take control, even when something doesn’t feel right. There can be a sense that your power belongs to others, or that it’s safer not to fully claim it. This can keep you stuck in dynamics, relationships, friendships or jobs, where your needs are overlooked or your voice isn’t fully expressed. This is about slowly reclaiming your authority - not through force, or doing to others as was done unto you, but through a deep understanding of your strength and power. As you begin to stand in your own energy, this disempowerment starts to loosen, and you begin to reconnect to your inner knowing.

Soul Contract number 10-1

The self-sabotage for the 10-1 energy is usually driven by perfectionism and high expectations. You might delay starting, overthink decisions, or become so focused on getting things right that progress slows or stops altogether. There’s often a quiet sense that what you do isn’t quite good enough, perhaps learned from childhood and the high expectations of your parents, which can lead to the belief that you have to work hard in order to achieve. This can serve to keep you stuck between high standards and taking on too much responsibility. The power here is choosing progress over perfection and allowing things to be imperfect but real. As you relax your expectations, you can then create space for a much more sustainable way of moving forward.

Soul Contract number 11-2

11–2 self-sabotage often shows up in how you process and learn. You might compare yourself to others, feel like you’re not keeping up, or doubt your intelligence because your way of understanding doesn’t match what you see around you. This can lead to holding back, second-guessing yourself, or not fully trusting your own mind or the deep intelligence that you have within you. The pattern isn’t that you can’t learn - it’s actually that you’re trying to do it in a way that isn’t natural to you. The goal here is to start building trust in your own process and allowing your way of integrating information to lead your life. When you do this, your clarity and unique way of processing information can come through much more easily.

Soul Contract number 12-3

The self-sabotage for 12-3s (and one I know extremely well) comes through overextension. You probably love to take on a lot, holding big ideas, and pushing yourself to do more, but this often leads to burnout or inconsistency. You might start multiple things, feel stretched across them, and then struggle to sustain the energy needed to complete them. This can create a sense of frustration or guilt around not doing enough, even when you’re already doing a lot, and trigger the unworthiness of the 3 energy. The pattern is all about expansion within balance, and the shift is about allowing space for rest and pacing yourself more intentionally. When you honour your capacity, your energy becomes more balanced, more focused, and what you create has much more longevity.

Soul Contract number 13-4

13–4 self-sabotage often shows up as resistance to softness and trusting the flow of life. You might want to stay in control, push through, or rely on structure in a way that keeps you slightly guarded, particularly in emotional or relational spaces. There can be a discomfort with vulnerability or a belief that softness isn’t safe or effective, perhaps learned from having a mother who didn’t show you her soft, maternal side. This can create distance in relationships or a sense of having to carry everything alone, that can trigger the 4 energy of needing to do it all yourself. When you recognise that the Divine Feminine energy of the 13-4 is creative, spiritual, soft and powerful, all at once, you can begin to tune into those energies, and allow them to come through - opening the heart gradually and learning to allow your softness to coexist with your strength.

Soul Contract number 14-5

The self-sabotage of 14-5 tends to play out through intensity in relationships. You might move quickly, become deeply involved, and then find yourself in cycles that feel overwhelming or hard to sustain, especially with the people closest to you. There can be a pull toward constant interaction or reflection through others, as this is the core driver of the 14-5 energy, without enough space to process independently. This creates emotional highs and lows that are difficult to manage, creating exhaustion and burnout. The goal for the energy is to create more space between experiences and allow yourself time alone to integrate. As you do, relationships become clearer, less intense, and far less consuming.

Soul Contract number 15-6

15–6 self-sabotage often shows up as constant searching. You might feel like you haven’t found your thing, your direction, or where you truly fit, and so you keep looking outward for answers. This can lead to jumping between paths, second-guessing choices, or feeling unsettled even when you’re actually in the perfect place, in perfect Divine Timing. The pattern is looking externally for something that needs to be recognised internally. This energy is all about turning inward and allowing your knowing of what’s best for you to grow from within, rather than chasing it externally. As you begin to trust your own timing, the restlessness and uncertainty begin to turn into direction and inner clarity.

Soul Contract number 16-7

The 16–7 self-sabotage often shows up as disconnection from the spiritual or intuitive side of yourself. You might doubt what you feel, struggle to trust subtle experiences, or dismiss things that don’t feel tangible or provable. This can create a gap between you and your own spiritual resonance, even though it’s naturally there, and pushes on the indecisiveness of the 7 energy that pulls you away from your intuitive knowing. You might rebel against your role, yet when you have this energy you are here to grow spiritually. The shift is practice and openness - letting yourself engage with what you feel without needing immediate certainty. As you do this, trust builds and your inner connection becomes much more accessible.

Self-sabotage in the Soul Contract numbers 17-8 to 22-4

Soul Contract number 17-8

17–8 self-sabotage often comes through holding yourself back from full self-expression. You might censor yourself, stay quiet in situations where you could speak, or feel hesitant to show who you really are. This can be linked to earlier experiences where expression didn’t feel safe, so the pattern becomes one of self-protection - especially with the 8 energy that can feel other people’s emotions too deeply and so learn to become the peacekeeper. Over time, this limits how fully you show up in life. The goal is to gradually allow your voice and presence to come forward, even in small ways, so you can come out of suppression and into full self-expression.

Soul Contract number 18-9

The self-sabotage of the 18-9 can show up as indecision and lack of completion. You might hesitate, overthink, or struggle to follow things through, leaving ideas or intentions unfinished, even when you really want to do them. There can also be a tendency to look back at past decisions and question yourself and your choices, which keeps you stuck in uncertainty about how to move forwards. This is about forgiving the past and following the quieter inner nudge within you, and letting that be your guide. As you begin to trust your direction and release the weight of the past, you will be able to make decisions, and really stick to them.

Soul Contract number 19-1

19–1 self-sabotage often shows up as heaviness and taking things too seriously. You might carry a strong sense of responsibility, find it hard to relax, or feel like life has to be taken seriously at all times. This can limit joy, spontaneity, and lightness, and sometimes turns inward as self-blame. This frequency is about allowing space for play, and as you begin to loosen your grip, lighten up, and learn to laugh at yourself and the world around you, everything starts to feel lighter and more fluid.

Soul Contract number 20-2

The self-sabotage for 20-2 shows up as trying to fit where you don’t. You might adapt yourself to meet family expectations, stay connected to environments and cultures that don’t fully align or that you no longer feel a connection to, or question your path because it looks different from what you’ve known. This can create inner conflict and a sense of not quite belonging anywhere. This is about letting go of something you’ve outgrown, so you can move beyond what’s familiar and trust where you’re being pulled to. As you do this, your path begins to feel more natural and aligned, and you can step into the movement of the 20 that will take you places your soul is wanting you to explore.

Soul Contract number 21-3

21–3 self-sabotage often shows up as taking the long, hard way through everything. You might push through resistance, hold onto struggle, or feel like things only move forward through effort and force. There can be a quiet belief that if it isn’t hard, it isn’t meaningful, which keeps you locked in cycles of overexertion or internal resistance. Beneath that is often blocked creativity or unprocessed emotion that makes movement feel heavier than it needs to be. The goal here is to learn to channel your strength and endurance with more awareness, allowing yourself to move through obstacles without adding unnecessary struggle. As you do, your power becomes more directed, and things begin to open and move with greater ease.

Soul Contract number 22-4

The self-sabotage for 22-4 often shows up as not recognising your own wholeness. You might focus on what’s missing, doubt your value, or feel disconnected from your own sense of beauty or completeness - whether it’s internal or external. This can lead to holding back, playing smaller, or not fully stepping into your potential. With this energy you’re here to step out of feeling unworthy, incomplete and ‘not enough’, remembering and reconnecting to your inherent worth - not as something you have to earn, but as something that already exists within you. As you reconnect to yourself, your soul and to Source, that cohesion between your internal and external self at last begins to align.

A final note on how to work through self-sabotage

It may be that you resonate with parts of what I’ve written, and not with others, and that’s completely normal.

Everyone has their own life experiences, and so this guide is just a snapshot of what might be under the surface. But I hope this helps you recognise any self-sabotage you’ve been carrying, and that naming it brings a little relief and acknowledgment that you’re not on your own struggling with it.

But once we allow ourselves to recognise the self-sabotage patterns that our driving our lives, we can recognise that they’re often just a way for our ego-mind to keep us in separation and limitation. This is its role - it is the ceiling of our consciousness, and we are here to move through and past it.

And as we get clear on the real emotional driver of self-sabotage - whether it’s fear, unworthiness, shame or anything else, we can begin to gently transmute it through deep inner healing and step out into gratitude consciousness, love and worthiness.
